Defining Identity Through Sport: The I Am Project
When children are asked to choose one word that best describes who they are, the answers are often beautifully simple and powerful. For many young athletes, that word comes easily: Baseball. Soccer. Dance. Cheer. Each sport becomes more than an activity—it becomes part of their identity, shaping the way they see themselves and the way they want to be remembered.
At Hayes & Fisk Photography, we believe every portrait should tell a story. Through our John Singer Sargent–inspired I Am Project, we invite children and families to define themselves with a single word. That word becomes the foundation of a portrait that not only captures their likeness, but also their passion and spirit.
Over the years, we’ve had the privilege of photographing young athletes who proudly chose words tied to their favorite sports. From the determined look of a baseball player gripping his glove, to the grace of a dancer frozen mid-movement, these portraits radiate authenticity. Each image is timeless—an heirloom piece of art that honors who they are in this moment of their lives.
The I Am Project goes beyond photography; it’s about empowering individuals to embrace their uniqueness and celebrate what defines them. For children, it’s a reminder that their dedication, joy, and discipline matter. For parents, it’s a treasured keepsake that preserves not just a stage of life, but the essence of their child’s identity.
We are currently inviting individuals and families to participate in this special artist series. If you or your child would like to create your own portrait story, we’d love to hear from you. Together, let’s capture the word that defines you.
